Educational Overview

Education is the key fuel to growth and prosperity in any region. Miami County offers a wide variety of first-class educational opportunities from pre-school to post-secondary. The region is also fortunate to have excellent career education and training offerings for all ages.  The region boasts nine 4-year and three 2-year colleges offering a wide variety of certificates and advanced degrees. Within a 60-mile radius, the offerings grow to twenty six institutions offering degrees in advanced technologies, biomedicine, research, and information technologies, just to name a few.  In fact, 25,000 engineers and scientists live and work in the MSA, creating one of the highest concentrations of scientists and engineers in the nation!

Colleges & Universities

Edison State College
Edison College in Piqua offers thirty 2-year associate degrees designed for students looking to launch a professional career or transfer to a 4-year college. Occupational and technical programs at Edison prepare students for a career in business, engineering, health or public service. Edison's career education programs have been developed to provide students with the job skills area employers are seeking.

Edison can provide extensive training to area manufacturing and service businesses. All training is customized to meet the specific needs of the employer. One firm reported a 4 percent increase in its bottom line due to efficiencies created through Edison training. For more information, visit Edison College

Sinclair Community College
Sinclair College in Dayton is among the largest community colleges in America. Sinclair offers a wide variety of 2-year technical degrees and liberal arts programs for those pursuing a 4-year degree.

In total, twenty five institutions of higher learning are located within about an hour of Miami County. These include:

Career & Technical Programs

Upper Valley JVS Applied Technology Center
Upper Valley JVS in Piqua offers (vocational) career and technical programs to high school students and adults in Miami and Shelby County. UVJVS also offers a wide variety of training programs that meet the needs of business and industry. Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC)
MVCTC offers full-time and part-time vocational and technical courses and programs. On-site training, apprenticeship program assistance, job profiling and assessment are also available to area business and industry. For more information visit MVCTC

While Career and Technical Schools provide excellent programs for students and companies in the area, the region also boasts a long list of schools and institutions that provide highly specialized training. These include:
