 UVMC (Upper Valley Medical Center) is a not-for-profit healthcare system serving the needs of Miami County and the surrounding area. Comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services are provided along with a full complement of diagnostic and treatment services and behavioral healthcare programs.
The healthcare system features a state-of-the-art acute care hospital -- the Upper Valley Medical Center -- located mid-way between Piqua and Troy, Ohio. The 139-bed hospital opened in June 1998 and underwent a patient care addition and emergency department expansion in 2004 to keep up with the growing needs of the community.
 The UVMC system also includes three long-term care centers, a dialysis center, outpatient satellite facilities throughout the county, extensive rehabilitation services, sports medicine, occupational health and an insurance company specializing in serving the health insurance needs of employers throughout Ohio.
In October 2003, Upper Valley Medical Center became the first hospital in southwest Ohio and the 87th in the country to earn prestigious national recognition as a Magnet hospital. Magnet is a coveted mark of nursing excellence awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an arm of the American Nursing Association. Magnet hospitals must meet stringent national standards that define the highest quality nursing services and patient care.
Upper Valley Medical Center also scored in the top 5% percent nationally in the most recent survey by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). UVMC earned the highest marks among hospitals in the region for the year 2003, with the following scores: Acute Care, 98%; Behavioral Care, 99%; and Home Care, 99%.
 UVMC employs approximately 1,800 full- and part-time employees, and has nearly 200 physicians on active medical staff.
