Miami County and the Greater Dayton Region have a rich history in advanced manufacturing, logistics and distribution. More than 27% of the county’s employment is engaged in a diverse list of manufacturing or related fields.  These manufacturing companies have embraced high-technology machining, engineering, and design to enhance productivity and efficiency.  The result is a strong and diverse manufacturing base of products from automotive to aerospace to robotics. 

Advanced Manufacturing

Advanced manufacturing operations cover a broad spectrum that includes aerospace and defense, automotive, robotics, computers, electronics, plastics and household products, just to name a few.

Miami County is home to global leaders in their respective industries. 

  • The county is a major focal point for Honda of America with distribution facilities in Troy and its suppliers located throughout the county.
  • Hartzell Propeller, world headquarters in Piqua, is the leader in the aircraft propeller market. Hartzell began making propellers during WWI for the Wright Brothers and today produces a broad range of wood, metal and space-age composite propellers for the aircraft industry.
  • Tipp City is the home to electrical component manufacturer, AO Smith Corp. Tipp City is also home to robotics manufacturers, Odawara Automation, Inc. and Process Equipment.

Advanced Motor Vehicle & Automotive Production
The region boasts more than 250 advanced automotive component manufacturers for nearly all the major automotive companies including GM, Honda, Toyota, Ford and Daimler-Chrysler. In fact, Honda has become Ohio’s leading manufacturing employer with nearly 16,000 associates and 165 suppliers in the State. Honda of America’s part distribution center in Miami County is just one of the numerous Honda-related businesses in the county and the region.

Advanced Manufacturing - CNC & Machine Tool
The region’s advanced manufacturing sector is supported by one of North America’s Top 5 largest concentrations of tooling and machining companies. The region’s machine and tooling capabilities include more than 800 tooling, machining, and related companies. These industries are supported by associations like the Dayton Tooling & Machining Association, www.dtma.org.

Advanced Logistics & Distribution
Miami County and the Dayton Region offer the location, technology and workforce to meet the logistics needs of your business project. The region’s proximity to a majority of the US population (61% within 600 miles) provides a competitive advantage to the distribution and logistics companies located here. Close proximity to Dayton International Airport, four Interstates and rail service make this the ideal location for your company’s logistics or distribution needs.

Meijer Distribution in Tipp City is one of the county’s largest employers. Meijer’s state-of–art distribution center is a full regionalized distribution facility supporting 67 super-center outlets over a four state region. Meijer is just one example of the numerous Miami County companies operating in the logistics and distribution sector.

Advanced Manufacturing – Plastics
Ohio traditionally ranks number one or two in the nation in plastics production. Plastics production in Miami County covers a broad spectrum from automotive plastics to food packaging.  To meet the growing needs of the plastic sector, Edison State in Piqua offers degree and training programs in the area of advanced plastics and polymers. 

Research and Technology
Wright-Patterson Air Force base is a major research, procurement and technology center for the US Air Force. Wright-Patterson has approximately 25,000 scientists, engineers, computer specialist and skilled technicians, 23 percent of Ohio’s aeronautical and astronomical engineers. This strong aerospace and technology presence has fostered innovation and technology transfer into a vast array of commercial sectors throughout Miami County and the Greater Dayton Region.
